Dino Dossier: Mesopithecus – Ape

Common Name: Mesopithecus
Species: Mesopithecus amicufur
Time: Late Miocene Late Pliocene
Diet: Omnivore
Temperament: Curious
Domestication
Tameable: Yes
Rideable: No
  • Wild: Mesopithecus amicufur is an omnivorous monkey species, primarily inhabiting the island's jungles. It is smaller than a human, but can move at about the same speed. It is not normally aggressive, but small groups of Mesopithecus can be troublesome. Additionally, their curious nature means they will try to steal anything they see fall to the ground.
  • Domesticated: A common pet, Mesopithecus is very easy to keep fed. It will eat nearly anything, though it prefers fruits to meats. Mesopithecus is most often used as a social companion, as it cannot carry enough to be a beast of burden, is not large enough to be ridden, and is not particularly useful for combat. It is, however, quite effective at vocally warning of incoming intruders with copious amounts of tossed fecal matter.
  • Known Information: Unlike most creatures on the island, Mesopithecus seems to actively seek out nearby humans to interact with. They are very friendly and curious, but this same playful nature means that they occasionally throw their feces at humans. Some of my tribemates become angry at this, but I am sure this is a sign of friendly socialization.

ARK: Survival Evolved Patch 181.1 – Patchnotes

These are the changes of ARK: Survival Evolved’s Patch 181.1, grouped into categories for clarity. If not otherwise indicated, they’re quoted from the relevant Steam Thread.

Game Changes

  • Increase absolute player Max Inventory Weight to 2x your Max Weight stat, rather than 1.2x

Bugfixes

  • Fixed bug where amphibious dinosaurs were losing stamina in water (darn Mac/Linux compiler syntax issue)
  • Fixed only getting 1 Engram Point for Levels 65 & 66 (this is not retroactive, but we’ll be implementing a respec option soon).
  • Fixed a server crash

(Original Announcement on Steam)

Here are the patchnotes of the previous patch (181.0)

Colorful flares

The flare-gun itself, while undoubtedly important, isn’t that interesting. At least not in a world where any large shadow looming over you might turn out to be a curious Brontosaurus. However, as reddit user /u/ARKaholic discovered, you can actually spice them up a bit by colouring them.

flaregun

To do so, simply drag the dye onto the flare-gun. If you’re thinking “That’s great, I need many of those” you should know that you can dye them in bulk. Coloring a stack of ten flare-guns or a single one costs the same amount of dye.

This all hinges on having such a gun, of course, but that’s not excessively tricky. The “Flare Gun” engram can be learned from level 10 onwards and costs 6 engram points. Constructing the gun itself will then take four items wood, two strains of fiber, ten units of sparkpowder and two gunpowder-items.

Dino Dossier: Titanomyrma (Ant)

Today the developers announced the "Titanomyrma". This new arrival in the world of ARK is, as is immediately apparent from the dossier above, an ant. Don't get overexcited though, you won't actually be able to ride it. Hilarious as though that would have been, the devs made the wise choice to stay away from that. In fact, you won't even be able to tame them (good news for the Dodo-Assault-Squad). They will however be an excellent source of chitin, as they'll be quite vulunerable when caught out of position.

Common Name: Titanomyrma
Species: Titanomyrma parvagigan
Time: Paleogene
Diet: Herbivore
Temperament: Territorial
Domestication
Tameable: No
Command: admincheat summon Ant_Character_BP_C
  • Wild: Titanomyrma is one of the smaller creatures on the island; A frightening thought, when you realize it is the size of a dog. A hive-minded Herbivore, Titanomyrma usually goes about it's business unless provoked. When attacked or threatened, it releases a chemical which alerts all Titanomyrma in a large range to help fight the aggressor.
  • Domesticated: Because of its hive mentality, I've not seen any successfully tamed Titanomyrma on the island yet. Fortunately for lone survivors, separated Titanomyrma can be easily picked off for a small supply of Chitin among other valuable natural resources.
  • Known Information: I've seen two varieties of Titanomyrma: Drones and soldiers. Drones are smaller, faster and land-bound, and they harvest for the hive. Soldiers are larger, slower and have wings; They defend the hive. If Titanomyrma is akin to other hive-insects, there must be Queens too, but I've yet to encounter such a variant.

ARK: Survival Evolved Patch 181.0 – Patchnotes

These are the changes of ARK: Survival Evolved’s Patch 181.0, grouped into categories for clarity. If not otherwise indicated, they’re quoted from the relevant Steam Thread.

Official Servers

  • Re-enabled Official ARK Server item uploads to Steam Inventory: Had disabled it due to a dupe bug which is now fixed.
  • Official Servers are now upgraded to the equivalent of “2.0” difficulty, rather than 1.0

New Items / New Structures

  • NEW DINO: Plesiosaurus (with custom saddle!)
  • NEW DINO: Ichthyosaurus (with custom saddle!)
  • NEW STRUCTURE: Poison Gas Trap

Dino Changes

  • Nonviolent Taming method for Ichthyosaurus (will follow-up with implementation for all Herbivores soon)
  • Sabertooth level-up damage scaling ramp reduced by 50%
  • Taming with Higher Taming Affinity now increases base level of dino up to 50% if 100% effectiveness, improving its base statistics (previously wasn’t doing much, was only generally increasing their damage)

Game Changes

  • Added two more player and dino levels, to get more engrams for the new goodies.
  • Players are no longer allowed to carry more than 20% over their maximum Inventory Weight, as this was otherwise exploitable when standing on Dinos.
  • Structure Paint effect looks much better and fully covers the surfaces
  • Preparation for tomorrow’s Mac & Linux game releases 🙂
  • Removed Weight limits on Smithy, Fabricator and any other Structures which accidentally still had them
  • Obelisk terminals no longer get an auto-demolish timer
  • In online PvP, use of sleeping bags now triggers cooldown to all your sleeping bags nearby.
  • Using spyglass now shows Floating HUD of Dinos, Players, or Structures that you are _directly pointing at_, for long range reconnaissance
  • C4 can now be placed & detonated underwater
  • Mod makers can now override the minimap and spawn regions
  • Clamped how much harvesting damage you can do to a resource to the remaining health of the resource (so that, for example, chomping a tiny dilo with little resource remaining in it with a massive T-Rex bit wouldn’t give you way more meat than it could reasonably have had). This may have the effect of reducing harvesting amounts in some cases, but is a necessary fix to what was essentially an overflow bug. Will consider re-scaling harvesting amounts accordingly as we proceed.

UI Changes

  • NEW FEATURE: Emote Wheel!

Server Features

  • AFK kick Timer at spawn/respawn screen: server configurable, default 40 minutes
  • Configurable server auto save interval

Bugfixes

  • Shader Model 4 (DX9, DX10) mode now looks a TON better, with proper light intensities, shadows and night lighting and dynamic lighting
  • Pipes/cables are no longer considered “enemy” foundations that prevent building nearby
  • Added missing mammoth dossier
  • Buff timers no longer ‘appear’ to reset when you relogin
  • Dragging a body no longer removes your FPV hands (bug required players to manually switch to weapon and then back to hands to restore their hands 😛 )
  • Various minor bug fixes

Getting the Steam ID of a Player

More and more functions in ARK Survival Evolved depend on the Steam ID (for example the list of administrators). The problem is, it’s never immediately apparent what ID you need, and what format it is supposed to have. While there’s an ingame command to get the appropriate number for online players it’s quite cumbersome for more than two people, so here’s how to do it better:

Go to steamid.co. You’ll be able to enter the Steam name of the person you’re looking for there. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be able to see their information.

The ID you’re looking for looks like this: 76561197995589012

It’s important to use an ID in the same format as above, called Steam ID 64, and not one of the other ID’s. If you need bulk conversion, simply click on the User-List tab on the site and you’ll be able to provide a list of names.

  • Spike blockades can no longer hurt you through walls
  • Added a lot of missing environmental Ambient Sounds
  • Building Walls can now be embedded in geometry more, providing more ways to place them
